Climate Change

Introduction

The global impact of human activity on the climate is now one of the biggest threats to our way of life.

Our ability to continually plunder the world resources and burn fossil fuel is now putting our future existence at risk.

Born on the back of globalisation, we now need a radical rethink of the system of supply and demand and how we use the planets resources.

Strategic Importance of Sustainable Food Systems

Communities need to continue to develop their ability to enjoy a sustainable healthy life. Research has shown that to develop a community based sustainable food system is now critical. The system needs to be a coalition of the whole community.

The links below are to key websites and resources which informed our strategic vision.

Originally founded in 1982, the Young People’s Trust for the Environment is a charity which aims to encourage young people’s understanding of the environment and of the need for sustainability.

The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change.  .

With a local CPRE group in every county in England, we’re advocating nationwide for the kind of countryside we all want: one with sustainable, healthy communities and available to more people than ever, including those who haven’t benefited before.

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world’s most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

The mission of Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty (COTAP) is to empower individuals and organizations in developed countries to address both climate change and global poverty.

Dedicated to the well-being of all people and guided by science, the World Health Organization leads and champions global efforts to give everyone, everywhere an equal chance to live a healthy life.

Climate Change risk: Are We Doing Enough, Fast Enough?

In the last few years, here in Cornwall, we have experienced unprecedented weather. We have had back-to-back named storms, heatwaves, flash floods and unseasonable weather. This more extreme weather poses a challenge to how we travel and feed ourselves. It also impacts on keeping Cornwall safe for future generations.

Three Strategic Actions

Climate is changing, the evidence is clear. The following are three actions and their impacts we need to build into our strategic vision and planning.

Action 1

The global climate change will impact on the current supply chain.

Reduce our reliance on imported vegetables and enable our community to eat seasonally and locally.

Action 2

The local climate will become more extreme.

Grow crops which are more resilient to future climate

Action 3

Water supply will become a scarcity.

Use drought resistant crops and harvest and store rainwater.
