About Globalisation & Food Security
Globalisation has given us freedom of choice, but at a massive cost which the whole of the planets resources have been plundered for profit and greed of a few.
A stark statement that the western world has happily put ‘on the back burner’.

Strategically, we are at a crossroads where we either change or watch our world force change upon us. Food production and food security is central to this change.
Global Food Security
Interdisciplinary and whole system approaches to research on UK and global food systems are cornerstones of the GFS programme.
GFS coordinates scientific research supported by its partners across government departments and agencies, the devolved administrations, research councils and Innovate UK. We build on partners’ existing activities, aiming to add value to their current and future investments, and complementing their individual strategies.

The Economist
Absolute levels of global hunger in 2022 could be the highest ever, as an exceptional set of problems threaten the world. A deal to get Ukraine’s trapped exports back on to the global market might help, but the war, along with the covid-19 pandemic and climate change, has exposed the fragility of the global food system.

International Food Policy
In the current “nutrition transition,” the consumption of high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods high in fats and sweeteners is increasing throughout the developing world. The nutrition transition, implicated in the rapid rise of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases worldwide, is rooted in the processes of globalization.

Metabolic
When the demand for water within a defined time period cannot be met with locally available resources, either due to lack of water availability or poor water quality, the region where this is occurring is said to be experiencing “water stress.” Regional and temporal variability in water availability explain why many regions of the world are water stressed.
